Converting your tandem to electric


 

Rare are the brands that offer electric tandem bikes (except for the electric tandem moustache)

 

Thanks to the LIFT MTB pedal motor kit, it is now possible to transform a tandem into an electric tandem, quickly and easily,

 

The installation of an electric motor on a tandem bike often involves more parameters than the transformation of a classic bike into an electric bike, so we have created a specific electric tandem kit with the addition of a special crankset and the possibility of putting a chainring on the left side (as on an original tandem).

 

We also use our special reinforced freewheel model of the PRO kit with 6 pawls and 72 engagement points, the freewheel bodies in tandem are generally very stressed, it is therefore imperative to use this type of freewheel in electric tandem !

 

Here are the different possibilities for the electrification of your tandem:


THE DIFFERENT EXISTING TANDEM TRANSMISSIONS AND ELECTRIFICATION SOLUTIONS:


Case 1: Mixed left-hand drive for tandem


Tandem converted to electrical

 

The most common today is the mixed transmission:

 

The front crankset is connected to the rear crankset by a connecting chain on the left.

 

Originally the person at the front has a specific crankset with a single chainring on the left that goes to the rear crankset via a connecting chain.

 

Originally the person at the rear has a crankset with two sets of chainrings, a single chainring on the left for the front/rear link, and a classic crankset on the right for the rear wheel.


There are 2 possible solutions for the mixed left transmission: 


  

1.1 Left hand drive mixed / rear engine:

 

Generally the simplest.

 

Advantage :

 

-Simple to install as you only have to modify the rear part of the tandem.

-Easy to adapt for single or double chainring rear drivetrains, or with a rolhoff tandem hub with integrated gears.

- You keep the front/rear synchronization (some prefer...)

 

Disadvantage :

 

- Not always compatible with some rear suspension systems of all-suspension electric tandem bikes.

- Not always possible to keep 3 chainrings at the right rear if the bike is equipped with them.

Composition of the electric kit tandem left mix / rear motor:

-Front crankset identical to the original one (we keep the one of the bike)

-A specific left rear crank with a unique left chainring (included in the kit)

- A right crank with a freewheel system on the chainrings (included in the kit)

- A single or double chainring on the right for the connection with the rear wheel. (included in the kit)

 


 -1.2 Mixed left-hand drive / Front engine:

 

Advantage :

-Easy to adapt for tandem frames with rear suspension.

-Easier to keep 3 chainrings at the rear if the bike is originally equipped with them.

-You keep the front/rear synchronization (some prefer...)

 

Disadvantage :

- Ground clearance in some cases.

 

Composition of the electric kit tandem left mix / front motor :

 

- Rear crankset identical to the origin (we keep the one of the bike)

- Specific left front crank with single chainring for connection to the rear crankset (included in the kit)

- Right front crank with freewheel system on 38mm chainring for connection to the motor (included in the kit)

  


Case 2: Straight tandem transmission


 

There is another possibility of a tandem transmission called a straight transmission:

 

Less common, the straight drive requires very few or no special parts for the crankset, which makes it simpler for the manufacturers:

 

In the case of the electric tandem straight drive, the front crankset drives the rear crankset via a connecting chain on the right.

 

The person at the front has a classic crankset with a right-hand chainring.

 

And the person at the rear has a classic crankset composed of a chainring connected to the front crankset by a connecting chain placed on the right, and one or more chainrings for the connection with the rear wheel, the front crankset will thus be dissociated from the rear crankset.


There are 2 possible solutions for straight transmission: 


-2.1- Straight transmission / Rear engine :

 

Advantage :

- Simple to install as you only have to modify the rear part of the tandem.

- Easy to adapt for double or single chainring transmission and with rolhoff tandem hubs. 

- The rear tandem crankset becomes dissociated from the front crankset thanks to our freewheel system integrated in the chainrings of the right rear crank (some prefer synchronized, others not, it's up to you).

 

Disadvantage :

- Not always compatible with some electric tandem bike suspension systems.

- Not always possible to keep more than 1 chainring connected to the rear wheel if necessary.

- The front/rear crankset synchronization is removed (some prefer synchronized, others not, it's up to you).

- Sometimes requires the use of a second crankset with freewheel at the front if you want to be fully synchronized.

Note: With the help of the motor, small chainrings are generally less necessary, and it is still possible to upgrade the transmission with a larger chainring for more versatility, see our article below on this subject:

Composition of the electric tandem kit Right hand drive / rear motor :

 

-Front crankset identical to the original one (we keep the one of the bike)

-A classic left rear crank (included in the kit)

- A right crank with a freewheel system on the chainrings (included in the kit)

 

- Chainring -1- right side for the connection between the front and rear crankset (included in the kit / usually 32 teeth).

- Chainring -2- right side for the connection between the rear wheel. (included in the kit, between 30 and 38 teeth depending on use)

- Chainring -3- with 38 teeth for the connection to the motor (included in the kit)

 

 


 

 -2.2- Straight transmission / Front engine :

 

Advantage :

- Compatible with all electric tandem suspension systems.

-Easy to adapt for double or single chainring transmission and with rolhoff tandem hubs. 

-The front crankset of the tandem becomes dissociated from the rear crankset thanks to our freewheel system integrated in the chainrings of the right front crank.

 

Disadvantage:

 

- The front/rear crankset synchronization is removed (some prefer synchronized, others not, it's up to you.)

- sometimes requires the use of a second crankset with a freewheel at the rear if you want to be fully synchronised.

 

Composition of the electric tandem kit Right hand drive / front motor :

 

-Front pedals with specific right crank with freewheel system and two chainrings.

- Chainring -1- right side for the connection between the front and rear crankset (included in the kit / usually 32 teeth).

- Chainring -2- right side for the motor connection. (included in the kit, 38 teeth).

 

- Rear crankset solution 1 with specific right crank with freewheel system and two chainrings (which allows to dissociate the front and rear crankset).

- Chainring -1- right side for the connection between front and rear crankset (included in the kit / usually 32 teeth).

- Chainring -2- right side for the connection to the rear wheel. (included in the kit / usually 30 or 32 teeth).

 

- Rear crankset solution 2 with original right crank without separating the front and rear crankset.

- Original chainring -1- right side for the connection between front and rear crankset (usually 32 teeth).

- Original chainring -2- right side for the connection to the rear wheel. (single, double or triple chainrings).

Our tandem crankset can also be mounted without the kit.

 

This will allow you to disassociate the front crankset from the rear crankset if you have a straight transmission.

 

This makes the practice of electric tandem or classic tandem easier for some, as it allows a simpler synchronization of pedaling speed between the two users.
