Our opinion on BAFANG, YAMAHA, SHIMANO, BOSCH, BROSE, CYC and XOFO engines.

hub motor or mid drive motor (BAFANG or LIFT-MTB) ?

Here is our opinion on the different models of adaptable DIY kit available on the market, and competitors of the LIFT-MTB to transform a downhill, enduro or all mountain bike into an electric bike.

The LIFT-MTB electric bike motor system is suitable for all types of riding, whether you’re doing simple hiking, cross-country, road, enduro, or even extreme downhill and freeride ebike.

Opinions on Mountain Bikes wheel and hub motors bike kit:

Below is a text explanation of the differences between the wheel motor and the mid drive motor:

  • On a hub motor, the masses are very badly distributed.

People usually only compare the overall weight of a system. It is a mistake to take only this aspect into account. If the weight is not centered and not suspended like on a electric bike motor, it induces many problems.

Certainly on paper it deceives the consumer because we are just talking about… weight! But in reality it is very disabling.

A simple example to understand: try to run with 1 weight of 2 kilos at arm’s length rather than in a backpack or against you. After a few hundred meters, you will quickly understand the importance of a good weight distribution.

  • The hub motor kit becomes heavier with use.

On paper, we have an inert mass of 3 kg or even 4 kg for a complete electric wheel; in motion, it becomes exponentially heavy. In fact, with such a system, at 20 km/h, you will increase the weight of your bike by about 6 kg compared to a conventional wheel. This is called the gyroscopic effect, click here for more details.

It is often said that 500 grams gained on a wheel is equivalent to gaining 1kg on the bike. Imagine a hub heavier by 3kg, if we respect this ratio it makes 6kg more on the bike… And of course, the faster you drive, the more exponentially it increases.

  • The hub motor induces unsprung masses.

The weight makes a swing at the end of your suspensions, with all the disadvantages that result in efficiency as well as in feeling.

This also induces additional constraints on the suspensions.

We can notice some axle breakages on some hub motors models (only in extreme use though).

bafang ou lift
  • The hub motor has a given gear ratio.

It will either have good low-end power to climb well, or high-speed power to go fast.

It is impossible to have a good compromise, that often generates big consumptions and obliges to have bigger and heavier batteries because the engine works forcefully has a moment on ranges of speeds which are not optimal, what is not the case with a electric mid drive motor bike kit like the LIFT-MTB, because the different speeds are used by the derailleur to adapt the engine speed to the slope, the engine will work on an optimal speed range.

Imagine that you have only one gear of your choice on your car, which one would you take?

Motor transmission for electric conversion kit
  • Compatibility.

This type of bike motor is not compatible with bikes with a through axle for the rear wheel attachment (12×142 / 12×148 or 12 x150) which represents an incompatibility with 80% / 90% of current bikes.

And even if this type of motor is by chance compatible with your current bike, be aware that it will certainly not be adaptable to another bike which will limit you if you want to change your bike, or even if you want to sell your kit separately from your bike.

Beware also of hasty comparisons of power between a hub motor and a mid drive kit, the DIY motor having a reduction via the transmission of the bike, the power (in W) can not be compared as is.

Imagine that you have only one gear of your choice on your car, which one would you take?

axe traversant moteur roue
It seems obvious that hub motors are very good for mountain bikes, city bikes, tricycles… but not at all adapted to mountain bikes as we like it…

We therefore consider these hub motors to be relatively unsuitable for mountain biking, as they do not promote bike handling, quick changes of angle or jumps.

It is not physical to use such a system on an Mountain Bikes compared to a mid drive motor.

The performances are not bad but the big problem remains the constraints of consumption, weight and gearing.

This is why, except for some low-end bikes, no manufacturer uses this type of electric engine in Mountain Bikes .

We have also selected and marketed a model of electric wheel motor that is suitable for use in electric road bike / electric city bike / and electric mountain bike .

This electric hub motor kit will allow you to convert a classic bike into an electric bike in a quick and easy way.

Opinions on Bosch / Yamaha / Brose mid drive motors …

Explanation of the differences with the competing mountain bike mid drive motors:

The BOSCH or Yamaha, Brose engines are very good products for those who want to ride peacefully…

They suffer from some shortcomings to be pleasant and perform 100% on the field.

  • The price

Any Yamaha or Bosch bike with proper equipment is very expensive.

The LIFT-MTB system allows you to equip your current bike at an affordable price.

It can be assembled and disassembled in only 10 minutes.

You can quickly modify your bike or equip a second one with the same engine.

You get a better performing bike for less money.

Your kit and your bike keep their value in second hand since they are dissociable (how much will be sold second hand the electric bikes in breakdown…?).

The reliability of these competitors is sometimes mediocre, with a near obligation to return to the dealer for the use of a professional diagnostic kit with generally expensive interventions.

Keep in mind that a complete electric bike at 3000 euros is still a part-cycle at 1500 euros with an inseparable motor / battery at 1500 euros with our electric kit LIFT-MTB you will have a more upscale assembly while keeping your bike.

  • The weight

On the one hand, our engine is a little lighter for more power. On the other hand, in 90% of the cases, we mount the batteries in the backpack, which allows us to save about 2.5 kg on the bike during use. The difference is enormous!

We can also, on request, mount smaller batteries of about 1.2 kg according to your types of output, etc.

batterie 8.7ah pour vtt électrique
  • Reliability

The motors and mechanism used on competing models are generally very complex, full of electronics and difficult to repair by the user. The LIFT-MTB system is simple, all wear components are easily available at the right price.

Everything is designed so that the user can replace the parts himself whether he is in France or on the other side of the world.

For example, Bosch or Yamaha electric bikes use a specific controller, integrated inside the motor, which can only be replaced by an authorized repairer. Our LIFT-MTB controller can be replaced without complete disassembly by an adaptable model with the same characteristics.

In the unlikely event of a breakdown with the lift-mtb motor, within 10 minutes you will be back on your classic bike so your bike will not be immobilized.

  • Performance

Sometimes poorly designed, some competing engines have too little ground clearance, some lack power and torque and are generally limited to 25 km/h maximum speed, while there is no limit for the LIFT.-MTB system

Bafang 8fun motor review: bbs01 & bbs02 bbshd

Below is the text explanation of the differences with the competing BAFANG mid drive:

The LIFT-MTB system is very often put in competition with the BBS model from Bafang 8fun ( bbs01 or bbs02 ) or XOFO

Here is our objective opinion on the Bafang engine:

Bafang is a Chinese brand that offers motors that are quite interesting, aesthetic, efficient and quiet.

These are city bike engines that some people derive for mountain biking.

Again, these bafang kits are very good for a quiet ride. The problem is that they are not designed with a European vision of mountain biking, but for urban transport, and with the requirements of the European Union.

these solidity and compatibility that we have at LIFT-MTB.

The requirements of a European mountain biker are not the same as those of a Chinese who wants to ride to work.

notice bafang bbs02

information bafang

Coming from the world of high level competition in downhill and enduro mountain biking as downhill world cup racers, or currently as mechanics on enduro world cups, our kit is designed specifically for mountain biking, taking into account not only the current and future binding standards, but also the constraints of solidity related to intensive use in all terrain, constraints that we know well

We therefore developed and patented the LIFT-MTB system, in order to create a product that, for us, does not exist on the market today. We were inspired by the 8fun Bafang bbs 01, bafang bbs 02 but improving many points that did not satisfy us.

In order to offer a system that is adapted to all practices, whether you do simple hiking, cross country, enduro, or even extreme downhill.

Here are the different key points we worked on, as well as the precise arguments for each technical choice:

action lift
  • The difficult compatibility:

Most sellers of Bafang bbs01 bbs02 advertise compatibility with many bikes. This is very true for city bikes, which mostly use BSA housings (with threads).

But this becomes less obvious for Mountain Bikes .

Indeed, most of the current Mountain Bikes models use PF 30 / BB30 / BB92 presser boxes, which makes them incompatible with the BAFANG.

Moreover, the use of adapters is not easy to implement as the Bafang housing is not composed of two bowls but of a single “cartridge” designed for 68 mm wide city bike housings.

The same goes for the ISCG mounting studs which make the Bafang system incompatible with the frame unless they are cut off.

You will not be able to keep your kit from one bike to another or resell it easily because it is not easily adaptable to another model.

Because most of the bikes on the market are in PF30 / BB30 / BB92 type casing or have ISCG mountings, which would make them almost all incompatible with the Bafang model.

Not to mention that for Mountain Bikes use, you will have to buy accessories like the chainring adapter to mount a smaller chainring because their motor comes with a heavy steel chainring for city use, so too big for Mountain Bikes use. (the original tray’s fixation is at the Chinese standard… so not standard at all!).

It requires, if you want to change it, the addition of an interface adapter to change back to the classic 104 mm 4-point.

Note that the Narrow Wide tray is included in the price of the LIFT-MTB system.

image demo lift
  • Limited ground clearance:

The Bafang 8fun bbs 01 / bbs 02 or XOFO does not offer sufficient ground clearance for Mountain Bikes in 80% of cases. The only known cases of compatibility are the Mongoose old version until 2013 (bike that we used as a test bike to develop LIFT-MTB and some old version GT drives… but you still have to cut the ISCG studs in both cases !see our article on ground clearance here )

montage bafangv
  • The impossible fast assembly:

With the Bafang or xofo it is impossible to assemble and disassemble the system quickly because it requires the disassembly of the bottom bracket each time to switch from one version to another.

It can be noted that when mounted and used intensively, the type of fastening of the Bafang can damage the internal threads of the frame on the lower part or on the first threads because the Bafang system is not screwed but pressed into the frame.

This is not necessarily a problem if you leave the motor on the bike for good, but it can become a problem if you want to change the configuration because you will have to rebuild the frame, and if the frame is too damaged, it will not be able to receive a classic crankset.

bolt on kit LIFT MTB
  • Incorrect string line:

The Bafang BBS-HD or BBS does not allow you to keep a correct chain line with a 104 mm chainring.

You will be forced to lock in two gears, which limits you to a much lower gearing and a much less interesting speed range than on a LIFT-MTB model in 1x 11 SRAM XX1 for example.

Some people ride the Bafang in double chainrings but the tendency is more and more to switch to a single chainring at the front, with a good spacing at the rear, in order to simplify the transmission and avoid the clutter, and to save weight on the front derailleur, on the shifter, on the cable system, etc.

However, we felt that this was not the best solution.

With a 1X10 or 1X11 speed transmission and assisted by an electric motor, you will be able to go anywhere.

Also note that the Q factor is not optimal with this engine. This means that the cranks are far apart. More info on the Q-Factor HERE.

The bafang bbs 01 or bbs 02 is not designed to receive an chain guide, or electric chain guide, which can be problematic in some cases, so it is even less suited to the practice of mountain biking than the mid drive motor lift-mtb.

  • A screen exposed to shocks and not necessarily useful:

The Bafang has a screen that gives information that we don’t think is essential for Mountain Bikes use.

Moreover, this screen is very exposed to breakage for mountain biking. For information, the cost of a Bafang screen varies between 130 and 150 €.

At LIFT-MTB, we have chosen to offer a simple throttle control with integrated battery gauge

which is, from our point of view, the only information needed for mountain biking.

For those who would like to get more statistics, we propose in option a screen with support which will allow to have much more information than the one of a bosch or bafang vtt but our screen is not necessary for the functioning of the kit it can be removed or deported very easily and very quickly. (more info on the screen HERE).

ecran
  • Average reliability of mechanical parts in intensive use.

We have done a lot of bafang testing and our bafang opinion is simple, the bafang motor is designed for city bike use.

It uses technology that is not necessarily ideal, the cranks are square; the original cranks are not very rigid and not made to take certain constraints.

This square standard only exists on low-end bikes; it has disappeared in mountain bikes since the middle of the 90’s and it’s not without reason: it was not reliable enough.

The bottom bracket axle is undersized in diameter: about 12.6 mm on the Bafang against 22 to 30 mm on the Lift.

The Bafang motor has a standard square footprint that tends to loosen.

On the system Liftwe use axes in high range steel top of the range 100% machined in France with a diameter of 22mmwith prints square of 19 mm on a sideThis is a standard used on top of the range BMX cranksets since 20 years, so absolutely unbreakable!

The original cast aluminum cranks are also not very rigid and strong compared to the forged or CNC machined 7075T6 aluminum model we use at LIFT-MTB.

Bafang uses a plastic internal gear, our motor uses stronger steel pinion.

Bafang uses a specific controller, integrated inside the motor, our controller can be replaced without complete disassembly by an adaptable model with the same characteristics.

If you break a part on a lift-mtb motor, in 10 minutes you will find your classic bike so your bike will not be immobilized, it will not be the case on a bafang.

History of LIFT-MTB
Pédalier version PRO 2
  • Engine performance and operation.

The Bafang is a brushless motor; it is very well designed.

We have done many tests of bafang powers on bench and in use to have a system that came closest to this model.

(see HERE our article on the technological choice to use a brushed motor).

The problem is that again the Bafang pulls too long because it is intended to be used on flat or medium gradient for city cycling.

However, in mountain biking we are much more confronted with steep slopes, and it is at this point that we use the assistance. We have therefore decided to have a system that pulls a little shorter in order to have an ideal ratio of developed torque to consumed power.

This reduces the volume and weight of the batteries, thus reducing the weight on board.

Finally, according to our tests, our LIFT-MTB system consumes a little less than a Bafang (comparison model BBS02 36v 500w, the bafang bbshd 1000w will consume much more).

From a consumption point of view, what we put forward is that with a 10 A/h battery of about 1.7 kg, we make enough difference in altitude and kilometers to take a lot of pleasure, rather than putting forward very complex figures and curves that are not necessarily telling.

We find it more concrete and easier for newbies (see our Strava tests HERE for those who would like more information)

Note that, unlike the Bafang system, we can modify the development of the primary transmission to make the system pull longer or shorter depending on what you are looking for (torque or extension) depending on your region or the type of outings you do.

In terms of noise, the Bafang (about 55 db) is very close to the LIFT MTB (60 Db)

On the other hand BAFANG use plastic gears (less reliable) against steel for the lift-mtb.

Attention there are several versions of Bafang BBS electric engine review, many are tempted by the model 1000w which poses many problems of transmissions and which requires a much heavier battery.

homologation route kit lift

We are aware that for some people, the Chinese BAFANG engine which is less expensive is sufficient in terms of performance or solidity for a softer use as city bikes.

In addition to our top of the line LIFTT MTB / MADE IN FRANCE model, we also offer for sale the Chinese BAFANG BBS engines with some modifications to make it more efficient for MTB use or in the classic road / city version.

Without equaling our LIFT-MTB model in terms of performance and especially adaptability and solidity, the BAFANG / LIFT-MTB version will be more performing and adapted to a mountain bike use, than a basic version of the BAFANG.

The mid drive motor imitation Chinese.

Many imitations of our product exist, making a quality product that works well is necessarily more expensive, the key is to know why it is more expensive here is a detailed explanation.

The specialty of many Chinese companies is to make products that look like yours, but without the qualitative, technical or expensive part of the product, in short they remove what actually makes all the added value of the product.

This is true for all industries such as phones, watches, shoes, clothes, and high technology in general, the world of electric kit for bikes is no exception to the rule…

Their products always look good, because they add a visible carbon part, or a “bling bling” anodized aluminum part, but that’s not what will make it a reliable and efficient product on the slopes!

For these Chinese imitations, the main problem is often the transmission reduction ratio which is very bad.

It is very expensive to miniaturize some parts like the freewheel of the engine to have a compact and efficient system, but you will discover has your depend on the bad surprise that after the purchase and test, because the salesmen never speak about it and that it is difficult to verify…

This is even more true if they use brushless motors which require a very high gear ratio to work properly. (click to see our article on : “the technology used” )

Thus, your crankset will have a too important speed of rotation and you will not be able to follow the cadence with your legs, approximately 140 rpm for example, for normally 80/90 rpm, you will not have a good torque at the level of the assistance, which will increase consumption, you must thus buy a larger and more expensive battery to make the same type of exit, the risk of overheating as well as the wear of the engine and the battery will be higher…

Some Chinese manufacturers use very large chainrings like 52 or 72 teeth to avoid overspeed of the crankset, this solution can reduce the speed problems, consumption problems, torque problems and overheating problems, but it does not solve it completely, and increases the ground clearance and weight considerably. or use overpowered motors that partially compensate for the fact of having a bad gear ratio but add other problems see our article “powerful electric motor”.

The other important point is often the high noise, because they use very noisy spur gears (comparable to a car reverse gear with a more singular noise compared to the other gears), then comes the generally complicated adaptability, and of course the bad quality of each part which will make that there is always a part which is ready to break, you can see below a list which recapitulates this.

In short, whatever we say, quality has a price, and remember that all that glitters is not gold!

Imitation Chinese kit

Original LIFT-MTB kit

Moteur velo PRO sous cadre

The crank on the imitation models:

-1-ARMS:

  • On the imitated kits the aluminum quality of the cranks is poor, so it will bend easily.
  • They use square cranks, which is a 60 years old standard and is not adapted to the current practice of mountain biking since it will quickly become oval.

-2-AXIS OF THE CRANK:

  • On the counterfeit it is often a square axle, very small diameter (usually 15mm) and poor quality steel especially since the axle has no heat treatment (which is a costly process to achieve) it will be easy to twist.
  • Only one axle diameter available, with often a crimped bottom bracket difficult or impossible to adapt to your bike because only BSA
  • Only one shaft length available: Generally only compatible with bsa 68 / 73mm threaded housings.
  • Poor quality of freewheel.
  • Q factor (gap between the cranks) too large especially on the BB92 version.

The crank on the LIFT-MTB kit:

-1-ARMS LIFT MTB

  • Made of T6 heat treated 6061 series aluminum.
  • ISIS drive standard, currently used by race face, fsa and many specialized brands.
  • Laser engraving of the logo.

-2- LIFT-MTB CRANKSHAFT.

  • 22MM axle in chromoly 4130 heat treated after machining.
  • Choice of axle available to suit every standard: 22/24mm sram / 24mm Shimano / 28.99mm Sram DUB / 30mm race face, rotor…
  • Different lengths available: 155 mm for all classic XC to DH bikes Fat bike version 170 mm or 190 mm.
  • Axle compatible with all bottom bracket: BSA 68 and 73 / BSA 83 mm / BSA 100 mm / BB92 / BB107 / BB 124 / PF30 / BB30 …
  • Good quality freewheel.
  • Q factor (distance between cranks) optimized to the narrowest.

Other bad points of the imitations.

-Motor support-

  • Made of very heavy steel or poor quality aluminum that will be subject to bending, so there is sometimes a need for a plate on each side to stiffen, which makes the kit heavier and longer to install.
  • Usually only one support with under-frame fixation.

– Counterfeit Reduction Report

  • Bad gear ratio with often a 13t sprocket, and a 48 teeth chainring or even up to 72 teeth! The cranks will turn too fast for the cyclist around 130/140 rpm, increasing the consumption and the discomfort for the user.
  • Very bad ground clearance with a 48t to 72t sprocket too imposing with a tendency to touch the ground.

– Other bad points about the imitation model:

  • Heavy steel deck, without narrow wide technology to avoid derailment.
  • Straight teeth on the internal gears of the motor, which makes the motor extremely noisy
  • not mud or waterproof (IP0).
  • Light surface anodization (which quickly fades in the sun)
  • Poor quality of the steel screws, rusting quickly.
  • No heat treatment on the sprockets and on the crankshafts or motor axles.
  • poor quality non-waterproof connectors.
  • No version with control screen.
  • No P.A.S. pedal sensor version.
  • No guide bar option.
  • Poor quality chain, no quick release.
  • No waterproof connections.
  • No fireproof battery protection bag.
  • low quality bearing sometimes not sealed.
  • tensioning roller without ring bearing.
  • Use many heavy steel parts at low cost.
  • Long to install, you will always have to disassemble the bottom bracket to put on and remove the kit.
  • Non waterproof controller, external mounting with a very bad integration.
  • Less ergonomic throttel.
  • poor quality freewheel motor or no freewheel!
  • difficult or impossible to make the adjustment of the chain, because it is a box with a sealed cartridge for the crankset.

The other strong points of the LIFT MTB kit

– LIFT MTB engine mount –

  • Machined on a CNC machine from a T6 heat treated 7075 aluminum block.
  • Available with 3 forms of support: interior, exterior depending on the frame and extend +25mm for specific frames.

– Reduction ratio LIFT MTB-

  • Ideal ratio 8 teeth x 38 teeth, for an ideal crankset speed of about 90 rpm.
  • Perfect ground clearance with 38-tooth deck
– Another point about the LIFT MTB kit:
  • 7075 narrow wide aluminum deck to limit the risk of derailment, choice of 30t or 32t and 38dent aluminum deck for primary drive.
  • gearbox with helical type gears very quiet.
  • Waterproof system to ip4 standard.
  • Quality 3M stickers with choice of x5 colors.
  • High quality black anodized parts.
  • Screws Steel class 10.9 or stainless steel A4.
  • Heat treatment on sprockets, motor axle, crankset axle in order to have stronger and lighter parts.
  • Control screen option available.
  • Version with pedal sensor type P.A.S. available, with simple and ergonomic adjustment.
  • Chain guide integrated on the internal version and available as an option on the subframe version.
  • High quality chain with quick release.
  • Waterproof connection.
  • Fireproof protection bag for battery.
  • High quality tensioning roller with ring bearing.
  • System composed of lightweight and optimized aluminum parts.
  • Quick installation only 10 minutes to assemble or disassemble the kit.
  • Waterproof controller integrated inside the motor.
  • Ergonomic 2-position trigger for thumb or index finger throttle control.
  • High quality motor freewheel Made in Germany.
